Good Summer Skin Care Leads to Great Fall Peels

This is that time of year I offer lots of warnings regarding your skin — especially after you’ve received a skin-nourishing facial — and this year is no different.

Intensely hot days and Sacramento’s dry air are tough on healthy skin, and now is the time to think about it. Whether it’s beach days, pool parties, or vacations, longer hours of daylight and hot, dry, weather can affect our skin differently than the colder and darker days of winter.

Believe it or not, applying sunscreen isn’t the only thing that needs your attention. Things like your skin regimen, morning and night, as well as how often you wash your hair and the cosmetics you use all make beauty very personal.

First, look for sunscreen products and makeup that offer at least SPF 30, have broad spectrum protection, and offer lip protection as well. Dermatologists warn that without these safeguards, your skin will age faster and increase your risk of skin cancer. I have one client who has now had five superficial melanomas removed because of how her generation believed in dark tanning, using products that encouraged, instead of discouraged sun damage. Sound like you?

Sunscreen is a go-to ANY time you are in the sun, including during the winter months, but because we tend to spend more time outside from May to October here in northern California, it’s especially important right now. Cover those arms when you’re out in your backyard working on your garden! Just because you tan instead of burn, doesn’t mean the sun is not aging as well as damaging your skin. According to a Healthline article, The Skin Cancer Foundation says that daily use of SPF 15 and/or wearing protective clothing can reduce a person’s risk of developing melanoma and other skin cancers by up to 50 percent. And don’t forget how it can keep your skin from premature aging.

Part of my reasoning for writing this right now — in the middle of summer — is because this is the time to think about preparing your skin for those amazing fall peels. In skincare, the autumn months are considered the ideal time of year for deeper exfoliation and I must admit, it gets me all excited about what these treatments can do for you. Once you start, you’ll experience progressive cumulative benefits for your skin including less acne and breakout activity, a more even complexion, smoother skin texture, reduced signs of aging, and a healthy, radiant glow.

As many of you know, I tailor all of my treatments to your skin’s unique needs, and that includes peels. My treatments range from light botanical enzyme peels to advanced chemical exfoliation. With so many formulas to choose from, I am able to zero in on the perfect protocol for your skin type and goals.

If you’re planning to peel this fall, now is the time to start upping your sun protection in advance and make sure your home care is on point. Remember that what happens in the treatment room is only part of the equation. To truly maintain your results and get the most from your peel series, you’ll want to be sure you are following up with a routine that properly nourishes your skin. Daily care is a must.

In the meantime, happy summer!

Beautifully yours,

Admin
